Coal Shaft Bay Broughton Island. In my opinion one of the most picturesque anchorages on the NSW Coast. Absolutely perfect in typical summer northerly weather. The bay is protected by a horseshoe shaped reef to the eastern side, which blocks all but larger southerly swells. When anchoring considerately, the deep sandy bay has room for at least ten cruising boats. Climb the cliff to walk around tho Esmeralda Cove. The bay is in VHF range from Port Stephens Volunteer Marine Rescue and has limited mobile reception. There is a small fishing settlement with a National Parks Hut and emergency VHF at Esmeralda Cove to the East of Coal Shaft Bay under a kilometer across the Island. While the entry to the bay is generous, carefully check with nautical charts. Broughton Island is a National Park with Marine Reserve fishing restrictions in place.
