    SV Choctaw | Sailboat ~ 13 m

When you like a multi day river trip/expedition and you are mostly self-supporting this is a nice river to follow all the way to Moengo and back. Take at least 7 days, but 10 is best. From Nieuw Amsterdam to Moengo following the Cottica river, which is 88nm long, mostly using the engine. Time your legs smartly with the tide so you save on diesel and you float your way upstream. Sometimes you switch off the engine to enjoy the jungle sounds. After 1 day you have figured out the timing for the tide in the right direction. You will easily do 20nm per day in a very relaxed manner but could do 40 when pushing. Check the MAS Facebook page for large cargo ships expected. They sail maybe once a week. You will have to give way, they are ocean ships and need the space. Don't anchor in the middle of narrow parts, choose for the shallower creek entrances. While navigating, look for floating logs to avoid, they sometimes are just visible. When going slow and with the current, they will not surprise you. After Alliance, there is no more Digicel coverage. Telesur has their antennas all the way till the end. Alliance and Bakkie are a must visit. The rest is random. There is a branch in the river that leads south earlier, but after 20nm a bridge will stop you. We have not explored that part. When visiting a village, please ask for permission before entering shore. Bringing some gifts for the kids is always appreciated. Some rum or smokes are appreciated by the elders. Have fun!
